VPN

For simplicity in this case I like to use a vpn browser add-on. They usually work regardless of the operating system, and can simply be activated or deactivated.

In addition to setting up a proxy server, it is also possible to use vpns, which is the same concept of setting a proxy server but managed by someone else. Keep in mind that free VPNs almost always sell your information to third parties.

Technology:

Free VPNs almost always sell your information to third parties. Therefore one should be cautious using them and not log into online banking web sites and other websites with critical information.

This error might also occur if you are using a vpn. A possible solution is to disable the vpn and try to access the same web page.

Using VPNs
Although it is not a free (economically speaking) solution, VPNs will allow to tunnel the traffic through an encrypted connection and make the content available on the other side.
The main disadvantage of VPNs is they do not have a user interface. They need to be hardcoded into the operating system, and implementaation can sometimes be difficult for users.

Technology:

Accessing a region-restricted webpage

Even when using the world wide web, we encounter problems to access URLs due to geographical location. More precisely, the problem I faced was with a spanish tv channel website. Contents (series, movies, progrms…) were not accessible from Austria due to the geographical blocking of the webpage.

VPN or Tor

There are two solutions for this problem. In both cases you have to find a computer in the actual country where the content is not blocked:

VPN services like Hola, which is also embeddable in a browser too, do exactly that: you connect to a server, which then lets you use a network in th preferred region
If there is no (free) VPN service, then you might use Tor: https://www.torproject.org/ which uses an network of nodes from around the world to forward your requests and your answers t a given destination. You also can choose an exit-node to be in a given country. So basically that node watches the video for you, and forwards you the content immediately. As a side effect, Tor also hides your identity.

Connect to the VPN of the university

I know that the university is subscribed to almost all digital libraries on the Internet. That means I can access all the publications for free, if I connect to the digital library through the university's network. To do that, I need to search for instructions on how to connect to the Virtual Private Network (VPN) of the university, follow the instructions and download the publication to my computer.

Using VPN to connect to TUWien network

Potential users are members of the TU Vienna, who have Internet Connectivity of any kind (but not with a TUNET IP address).
When using this service a TUNET IP address will be dynamically assigned to you. In cases where rights on Institute servers should be set on the basis of an IP address, employees (only!) may also be assigned a fixed address. For this service there are no additional costs involved. Employees can use their Network Account (username@tuwien.ac.at) to gain admittance. Students can use their Student Account (eXXXXXXX@student.tuwien.ac.at) to gain admittance. Other Accounts (username@vpn.tuwien.ac.at) can be requested via the Online Account Management.
and also with CISCO SSL VPN Client (AnyConnect) you can use VPN.Cisco Anyconnect is a VPN client based on SSL technology. The software can be installed directly from our VPN-Webportal. Available for Windows (32-Bit and 64-Bit), Linux, Mac OS X.
